
The Kennet and Avon Canal passes through Devizes. Parking at the Millenium Park on the Rowde Road (just 1.5 miles from The Barn) brings you to the top the the long flight. A stunning sight. Also by a great little coffee shop! Made up tow path - dogs on leads are fine. Canal path can take you into Devizes or for a long walk towards Melksham. Watch the drivers negotiate the locks. It takes in excess of 4 hours to complete the flight.

Avebury - the largest megalithic stone circle in the world rivals Stonehenge (but is quite different). Sheep and sightseers wander among the magnificent stones taking photos (not the sheep!). Dogs on leads welcome. Its very atmospheric. Walkers can take the footpath to Silbury Hill and ancient burial grounds. FREE entry but National Trust run the car park (members free) and charge for parking. Its a lovely place to visit for a few hours. Avebury Manor and gardens worth a look - especially at Christmas .

Silbury Hill English Heritage- on A4 near Avebury about 25 mins from The Barn. Good parking £2 for non members. Largest prehistoric man made mound in Europe. At 129 feet it matches the scale of the Egyptian Pyramids. Add in a visit to Kennet Long Barrows - a neolithic stone chambered tomb.

Wiltshire White Horses are a collection of iconic hill figures carved directly into the steep chalk escarpments of the county's down. Many can be seen from the road, most are accessible to walkers and usually offer great views.

Salisbury Plain - Imber Village - the ghost village of Imber is open on a small number of days a year. Fascinating trip with a delightful church. The plains themselves are excellent for hiking/dog walking. Pear Tree Hill and Erlstoke Woods being a good place to start. Do stay the safe side of the Red Line (very obvious) even when Red Flag is not flying. You may get to see tanks/infantry carriers not to mention helipcopters over head.
Devizes/Marlborough : Devizes is our local market town (Thursday is market day) town, with some excellent independent shops/supermarkets/ coffee shops. Just 10 mins from The Barn. Marlborough just a short 25 minute drive away is delightful , quite up market and boasts Marlborough College.
Frome/Bradford on Avon/Bath: All just 45 min to and hour away. Frome is positively arty and quaint, BoA is a mini Bath. Bath is a beautiful Cathedral City with its famous Baths and Bath Stone Houses.
Stonehenge: World famous Unesco World Heritage Site - prehistoric monument on a grand scale with great parking and a museum. Managed by English Heritage.
